Go-To Fall Skin Care Guide
With the new fall season comes warm sweaters, pumpkin lattes, apple picking, and cozy nights at home in front of the fireplace. However, the season may also bring dry, patchy, and dull skin that always seems to break out on an important or busy day. As you transition from cool summer dresses to warm coats, begin thinking about changing up your skin care routine to keep autumn skin problems at bay. Central City can help with our go-to fall skin care guide!
Repair Your Skin
Our skin may be showing damage leftover from summer days spent outside. We’ve all gone to the beach or had a picnic day without religiously applying sunscreen. This may have resulted in sunburns, hyperpigmentation, dry skin, and/or the appearance of fine lines. Now is the time to remedy these concerns!
Starting by picking up chemical exfoliation skincare products. Beta-hydroxy acid (BHA – also known as salicylic acid) and alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA – also known as glycolic acid) products are the gold standard in chemical exfoliation. These products will help lessen dark spots, even out skin tone, and brighten lackluster skin. For those with acne, BHA and AHA products will also help combat spots at the same time. Some of our favourite BHA and AHA products are from the new Inkey List range, available now at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Don’t forget to incorporate a manual exfoliating facial scrub into your skincare regimen like the St. Ives range of products from Walmart or Shoppers Drug Mart. You can also exfoliate your face by scrubbing your face gently with a facial brush or washcloth to slough off dead cells (just make sure you use a clean brush and washcloth to keep bacteria at bay).
For any fine lines or premature wrinkles, seek out retinol based products. These products have a similar anti-aging effect to the stronger Retin-A based prescription products, but are gentler. We like Vichy’s Liftactiv Retinol HA Advanced Concentrate from Shoppers Drug Mart.
Try using facial masks like Olay’s Luminous Overnight Facial Mask Gel Moisturizer to address dull skin. For an organic and inexpensive alternative, try a DIY home mask using soothing ingredients like honey, milk and aloe vera, which can be found in Walmart or T&T Supermarket.
We often feel bombarded with hundreds of products and may not always know what works best on our skin, so give Shoppers Drug Mart at Central City a visit and have a beauty expert analyze your skin and recommend the perfect products!
Now that you’ve addressed any skin damage issues you may be facing, it’s time to help your skin become accustomed to the cold weather and rain. As the fall chill settles in, our skin begins to feel dry and flaky. A great solution is to buy a thicker moisturizer containing the magic ingredient – hyaluronic acid. This miracle worker carries 1000x the water of its own weight, making it a perfect fit for dehydrated skin. For added hydration, invest in a good hyaluronic serum. Serums are more concentrated than moisturizers, meaning a little goes a long way! They also tend to be lighter so they will not only absorb faster, but they will also sink deeper into your skin. Olay has a fabulous product line of moisturizers and serums. For these products and more, check out Shoppers Drug Mart where you can find the latest skincare items from popular brands.
As we crank up the heat in our houses, we end up drying the air around us even further. To help add moisture, try a humidifier or an essential oil diffuser from Bed Bath & Beyond.
Prevent Skin Damage
Sunscreen must be used year-round as damaging sunlight can penetrate your skin on even the most cloudy and rainy fall days! Make sure your sunscreen has at least a 30 SPF. One of the best chemical sunscreen lines in the market is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios range. Recommended by many dermatologists, it contains the renowned Meroxyl XL protection, known for its excellent sun blocking properties. If you prefer physical sunscreens, look for brands like Coola or Banana Boat Simply Protect that contain dual mineral blocks of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide. If you have extra sun-sensitive skin and need to be very careful with the sun, you might want to consider layering a physical sunscreen over a chemical sunscreen. You can find all these sun care products at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Of course, a lot of our time in autumn, is spent behind the screen… Whether you’re working, catching up with friends online, or just relaxing with a movie, technology has become an important part of our lives. While many wouldn’t connect their phone or computer usage to their skin, studies show that prolonged exposure to blue light emitted from screens can cause skin pigment changes, inflammation, and premature aging. Adding a screen protector from Best Buy which blocks any blue light emitted from your phone or computer can help prevent any damage to your skin. Another good tip is to avoid using your phone before you go to sleep as that will not only affect your skin but also your ability to get a good night’s rest.
Body Skin Care
Fall skin care must go above and beyond the face! Remember that cold fall weather can also affect the skin on your body. Try an exfoliating body scrub to help with any dry flakes and dead skin – we love the Cake line from Shoppers Drug Mart for its delicious range of scents and moisturizing properties. You can also create a DIY scrub with raw sugar and coconut oil (available at Walmart) to exfoliate and hydrate!
Be sure to pick up a thick body moisturizer this fall from Shoppers Drug Mart or Walmart. Our all-time favourites, Cerave and Cetaphil creams, help combat the effects of cold weather with special emollients and humectants that bind water to the skin and prevent moisture loss.
Be sure to take some time for yourself this busy fall season with a relaxing professional spa experience from Japan Shiatsu Clinic. If you want to create a spa experience in your home pick up Himalayan or Epsom salts from Winners and flower petals from Continental Flowers to create a relaxing and moisturizing bath.
Glow Inside and Out!
Everyone’s heard the famous “beauty comes from within” line and oftentimes, when it concerns your skin, it’s completely true because amazing skin is dependent on your body’s health. Try vitamins recommended by the experts at Alive Health Centre or GNC for fabulous skin (as well as shiny hair and amazing nails). Get your steps in at Club 16 and shop for local fruits and vegetables containing Vitamin C at Farm Fresh Produce for an added skin benefits. For a relaxing drink that also benefits the skin, try a green tea full of antioxidants from Starbucks.
A new school year and busy work season and even fall holidays can be stressful, so take the time to rejuvenate your skin. Why not create a relaxing spa day in your own home?
